The paper was founded in the latter part of the 19th century, in 1868. This was the period when the civil war had just come to an end. At that point of time it started with the merger of four newspapers that were in existence since long before. "The Louisville Journal" and "The Louisville Daily Democrat" were two popular daily newspapers that merged with two other newspapers to give rise to Courier Journal. In fact, it was Henry Watterson who was responsible for the event also went ahead as the editing head of the daily paper, later on he also became a part owner of the newspaper. It was one of the two papers which were owned by The Binghams, the other being The Louisville Times. In 1986, Gannett Inc. took over both together and by the next year the other paper was stopped however due to its regular circulation and popularity Courier Journal ill continues.

The Courier Journal mainly covers news from the city of Louisville and is associated with some of the bigger organizations and universities. It is also the leading and most popular newspaper in Kentucky. With a reader base of more than 500,000 on a daily basis, it easily makes it in the top 100 papers in the US. In fact it is also in the top 50 daily read papers in the country. The paper is proudly operated with the assistance on more than 100 employees. The Courier Journal also runs a weekly paper called Velocity which is provided as a complimentary paper.
