The Obstacles In Running A Successful Courier Company

There is a lot of research and knowledge that goes into the formation of a courier company. A lot of amount, time and effort is also spent on hiring people and developing a human resource. So then once the company has started it should run smoothly. But that does not happen most of the times as that are many difficulties faced by a running business and since the service is dependent on so many variable factors the situation can go out of hand at times. Hence, here is where the real test begins that how efficiently you can run a courier company.

When we look at the problems faced by a courier company the first thing that comes to mind is the fluctuations in business. There are exceptions when you have a business courier service and get continuous work from one or two big clients. But the small operators cannot always be assured if the number of customers using their services and hence they have to try and adopt cost reducing or cost saving methods to run the business. The highly volatile nature of the market also makes it difficult for the service providers to quote a specific price. The other factor that can hit a company is the increasing fuel prices. Since most of the work involves traveling via car, scooters, bus, trains etc. a hike in the prices of fuel increases the cost for the company.

Since the courier company deals with different geographical units in a particular transaction, meaning that the two places (the place of the sender and the receiver) are at different parts of the world/country, natural calamities can hit hard on the service as there will be no orders for that area or if there are orders no source of delivery. Here the international players have a big advantage as they have the backing up of huge amounts of money which lacks with the smaller company owners.

Another problem, which can be internal, is the high interdependence of employees. There is no individual who does everything from taking an order to completing a delivery. Each work is distributed among the workers, which is a good thing as the work ids done much faster. But due to this a very high amount of interdependence develops which lead to the failure of the entire task if one person does not perform his/her task correctly. This can be fatal to the courier company as the goodwill and the trust is what brings the customers to them. A customer who looses faith in a courier company once will not risk sending his item through that source again.

Hence for the sake of the entire company it is highly important that each employee and manager understands and fulfills their respective responsibilities so that the business can flourish. In the meantime, the management should also develop strategic approaches to tackle other difficulties.
